Frequently Asked Questions about Gentle Hair Removal
What can I expect during laser hair removal treatment?
Treatments take place in your practitioner’s office. Your practitioner will use a small handpiece to deliver an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin. Therapeutic heat then safely and effectively removes unwanted hair.
Is Gentle Hair Removal safe for darker skin tones?
Yes! Other laser hair removal treatments don’t cater to all skin types, but there’s a Gentle Hair Removal treatment that’s right for you, no matter what your skin tone. Check out the infographic below to learn what your skin type is, and talk to your practitioner about which Gentle treatment is right for you.
How long does a Gentle laser hair removal treatment take?
A treatment can take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the treatment area and the condition being treated. Both legs can often be treated in as few as 15 minutes, as can an average-sized man’s back.
Is Gentle laser hair removal painful?
Some patients may feel slight discomfort, which has been compared to snapping a rubber band against the skin. This discomfort resolves quickly and is minimized by our patented Dynamic Cooling Device. Be sure and talk this over with your practitioner.
How many treatments will I need?
Multiple treatments are required to achieve the full hair removal effect. That’s because hair grows in three stages:
Anagen (the growth stage). Hair is thickest and darkest, so laser treatments are most effective.
Catagen (the transitional stage). The hair begins to loosen from its follicle.
Telogen (the shedding stage). The hair falls out to make room for new growth.
The hairs on your body are not always at the same stage, so you’ll need to undergo a few treatments, an average of six weeks apart, to catch them all in the growth stage.
How do I prepare for a Gentle Hair Removal treatment?
For about six weeks prior to treatment, you should avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing. On the day of your treatment, skin should be clean-shaven and thoroughly cleansed of any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products. Apply sunblock (SPF 30 or above) before your treatment.
Do not expose the treatment area to sunlight or tanning booth light prior to or immediately after treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus, a prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
What can I expect after treatment?
A cool compress or gel pack may be applied for additional comfort after your treatment. Any redness or swelling should resolve in a few hours.
What precautions should I take after treatment?
After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Your practitioner may advise additional precautions.
Are there side effects?
Permanent side effects are rare and may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruise) in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days. Your practitioner will have more information about potential side effects.
Are these treatments covered by insurance?
Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures. Consult your insurance carrier for conclusive information.
At The Beauty Base we use the highest medical grade IPL machine for photo rejuvenation. It is a system that uses wavelengths of light energy to target the melanin (pigment) of the targeted area creating heat which destroys and stimulates the skins structure causing hair reduction, photo rejuvenation, pigmentation reduction, and collagen rejuvenation.

Frequently asked questions:
Q: Is Laser Hair Removal right for you?
A: Laser Hair Reduction is most suitable for treating hair which is darker than the skin underneath. For tanned skin tones a small patch test may be required to determine if you are a suitable candidate.
Q: What to do before the treatment
A: Firstly visit The Beauty Base for a free consultation on your needs. If you have been shaving allow the hair to grow a couple of days so we can see what we will be treating. If you have been waxing, you will need to wait 3-4 weeks until the hair root has re-grown. Do not sun bake, sun bed, spray tan or fake tan for 2 weeks prior to your treatment as tanning of any sort can lead to superficial burning. If you have spray tanned please make sure it is all removed. Avoid perfumes and deodorants the day of your treatment and inform your therapist if you are on any form of acne medication or topical vitamin A. Shave the day before or of your treatment. If it’s your first time it’s best to leave a small area so we can see the hair growth and colour.
Q:What do I do after a treatment?
A: No sun tanning or sun beds for 2 weeks after your treatment. Sun tanning can result in irregular pigmentation occurring in the treated areas. Apply topical after Gel on the areas to reduce any irritation. We highly recommend a product we sell in store to stop infection. Always apply good quality SPF 30+ daily to avoid irregular pigmentation issues.
Q: What to expect during treatment
A: Our machine of choice for hair removal. It has a cooling element to reduce as much pain as possible. If you begin to feel uncomfortable at any time just advise your technician and they will make the treatment more comfortable. You can expect the area treated to detach hairs from the hair follicle as of 14 days. Each treatment should be booked at 21-30 days for best results.
Q: Are there any possible side effects?
A: Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the treatment area, which should calm within hours. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications. Any other side effects will be notified during the free consultation.
Q: What kind of results should I expect?
A: Your technician will advise you on the best results for you on your consultation. Keep in mind, treatments will reduce the hair but not always remove all hair. 6-12 treatments may be needed for the best results. Darker hair pigment with lighter skin pigment will take less treatments than one with lighter hair pigment on darker skin pigment. A customized treatment plan will be designed and advised to you with discounted courses available for your convenience.
